Automatische Updates Popup

Wie kann ich es abschalten? Wie kann ich dafür sorgen, dass ich nicht alle paar Minuten daran erinnert werde, dass mein Computer neu gestartet werden muss, obwohl ich schon einmal bestätigt habe, dass ich es zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt machen möchte?

Ich bin doch kein unmündiger Nutzer von Microsoft-Software, oder etwa doch? Für diese gestohlene Zeit sollte man euch verklagen! Was denken sich die Entwickler des Updatedienstes überhaupt, mir alle paar Minuten einzutrichtern, ich solle neu booten, obwohl ich wichtigeres mit dem Rechner zu tun habe? Soetwas regt mich auf. Später bedeutet nicht, dass nach 5-10 Minuten nachgefragt wird. Bestenfalls starte ich den Rechner gar nicht neu, breche den dummen Prozess manuell ab, und schreibe darüber einen Blogartikel mit Screenshot! Microsoft stinkt. Und seine Entwickler wohl auch.

Und ganz nebenbei frage ich mich, wer wohl auf das Bild klickt – hab’s direkt auf unsere Bildergallerie geschickt!

YahooMSN: Combined Instant Messenger

The deal is nearly perfect: Yahoo and Microsoft are planning to combine their instant messenger tools Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger to allow their users to communicate with those from the opposing messenger tool. Sounds like quite the thrill against Trillian and other merger tools. However, the entire conversion of both networks is scheduled to be done not before spring 2006. [via Golem]

Opera 8.5 as FREE Download

From today on, Opera will be free to use without their advertisement banners. The alternative to both Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer comes along with tools and functions such as Small-Screen-Rendering, Pop-Up-Blocker, Tabbed-Browsing, Download-Manager, E-Mail-Client, RSS-Reader and a Chat-Programm. There you go, this is a step ahead for the Norwegian company. I consider free software as an essential for the web, and without advertising their free software, a company in our modern world will probably be unable to survive for the longer.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7: Official Beta2

Developpers are already allowed to use a pre-release version on October 12th, but on upcoming December 7th, Microsoft will publish the official Beta2 release of their Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. According to Paul Thurrot, the release of the Beta2 for Windows Vista is scheduled on the same day. [via Golem]

Schleichwerbung im NDR

Schleichwerbung! Schon alleine das Wort macht jedem Vertreter des öffentlich-rechtlichen Mediums Angst und Bange. Und es kam noch dicker. Das Microsoft-Logo diente als Quellennenung des technischen Dienstleisters, und war nicht als Schleichwerbung beabsichtigt. Nunja, wirklich? Zuvor hatte der Linux-Verband kritisiert, dass in Grafiken zur Wahlberichterstattung der ARD, welche durch den NDR erstellt und durch den WDR redaktionell bearbeitet werden, das Microsoft-Logo eingebettet war. Weil solch ein Fall aber schon laut der Berichterstattung von Golem früher schon einmal in Bezug auf die Wahlberichterstattung aufgetaucht sei, wiegt sich der NDR in seiner Sache sicher.

Auf der anderen Seite, und das ist meine persönliche Meinung, bin ich es sowieso leid, dass die öffentlich-rechtlichen Senderhäuser sich über Gebühren finanzieren, und so nicht bzw. nur im geringen Teil am großen Kuchen der Werbewirtschaft teilnehmen dürfen. Uns allen und insbesondere den sozial schwachen und weniger begünstigten Bürgern erspart eine werbewirtschaftliche Loslösung der ÖRs die monatliche GEZ Gebühr, welche noch nicht einmal von staatlicher Natur ist, auf der anderen Seite könnte der Sendeauftrag der öffentlich-rechtlichen TV-Landschaft ganz gefährdet werden. Aber haben nicht alle Medienwissenschaftler schon sich dazu Gedanken gemacht, Vorschläge angeboten und Lösungen unterbreitet? Nichts wurde davon berücksichtigt bei der (Um-)Strukturierung der ÖRs…

Released: Firefox 1.5 Beta 1

The developper team released the Beta 1 for Windows and Linux and an Alpha 2 for OS X. I guess that’s a must download, must install, must use one.

Firefox 1.5 offers you to use new features like:

  • Automated update to streamline product upgrades. Notification of an update is more prominent, and updates to Firefox may now be half a megabyte or smaller. Updating extensions has also improved.
  • Faster browser navigation with improvements to back and forward button performance.
  • Drag and drop reordering for browser tabs.
  • Improvements to popup blocking.
  • Clear Private Data feature provides an easy way to quickly remove personal data through a menu item or keyboard shortcut.
  • Answers.com is added to the search engine list.
  • Improvements to product usability including descriptive error pages, redesigned options menu, RSS discovery, and „Safe Mode“ experience.
  • Better accessibility support including DHTML accessibility.
  • Report a broken Web site wizard to report Web sites that are not working in Firefox.

More of these changes and additions, and I believe Firefox will become the instant killer for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

This is truely an amazing SPAM mail, and I’d love to share this one. How stupid are people that they truely believe this email is for real and not fake? I believe there are several thousands of them who click the links in the email… and as if Microsoft themselves gave such instructions! (typos and errors included)

Windows Vista: The Killer Application

I’m back from the beach, and just have to puke on the following question: What do you need to run the upcoming Windows Vista without facing the classic latency problems? Here’s the answer (rumor?) from Microsoft which probably outdates their official statement:

  • Dual-Core-Processor
  • 2 GByte of DDR3 memory
  • 256 MByte RAM Graphics Card
  • SATA2-Festplatte

Since Vista is using 3D vector graphics to calculate the images and graphics on screen, it’s highly advisable to have a high-end machine.

I’ll stick to Windows XP for the near future, and then once I’ve done the Bachelor and actively work on my Master’s degree, I’ll consider buying a new high-end machine. But these requirements above are simply blowing my expenses. The most amazing discovery in concern of DVDs being played on Vistamachines is simply enough of kicking the users: You will probably need a new monitor to watch HDTV since the current systems won’t be truely supported anymore. This means a new stationary PC with a brand new monitor, or a brand new Laptop. On the other hand, I might think of confessing my soul to Apple for this treachery of Microsoft!

9 Days until Firefox 1.5 Beta

The Developer Team of Firefox has re-scheduled their release list for the upcoming browser versions (including betas, RC1 and RC2 candidates).

The lockdown for „Firefox 1.5 Beta 1“ will occur at 11:59pm on Tuesday, Sept 6 in preparation for release on Thursday, Sept 8.

For myself, Firefox has become an essential to web browsing again. This happened basically because of the loss of confidence of Netscape, and I began using MS Internet Explorer again for another two years of time. By now, I’m regularly switching the browsers, and the more news and info I see about Firefox, the less I’m interested in the free-of-update MS IE. On another note, I guess I have my „tech days“ here at the MikeSchnoor.com. First the new Microsoft Keyboard, then Opera as a highlight, and now Firefox. What comes next? ;)

Microsoft Leaks New Ergonomic 4000 Keyboard

Someone at Microsoft must have had a bad day for publishing content without approval. Fortunately, the web has its own regulations and such news can be digged up quite fast.

Here’s to the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, a new take on their split keyboard of old. A 14° gable separates the two groups of keys, which is complemented by the curved key bed and 7-degree wrist rest for what looks to be a truly comfortable typing experience.

The keyboard is rumored to have the following features:

  • gull wing design
  • optional palm lift to experience the seven-degree reversed slope
  • integrated palm rest
  • a spreadsheet for a zoom slider
  • five programmable keys
  • forward backward keys

The first idea for a price is around $55, since this is no official information and since Microsoft has not yet released the product officially.
